Towered entrance bays with belfries flank the gabled front of the clapboard Gothic Revival church. During the 1920s the church was enlarged to accommodate the crowds attracted to Yale University English professor William Lyon Phelps's (1865–1943) sermons, the first of which were in the 1880s. After Phelps's marriage to Hubbard's daughter, Annabel (1863–1939), in 1892, Huron City became their summer home, so that by 1922 he preached almost every summer Sunday. Known throughout the nation as a critic for Scribner's Magazine and as a syndicated columnist, his services drew as many as 1,000 people.
