St. John's Episcopal Church

This delightful little gabled High Victorian Gothic church is a visual landmark in Ionia. A square tower with a jerkinhead roof rises at the northwest corner of the building. Ruskinian polychromy richly ornaments the exterior. Red brick corbeling and checkerwork and other architectural elements decorate the yellow brick walls. The church has a cruciform plan and hammer beams support the roof. The church was designed and built by Waterbury (1839–1929), who came as a young man to Ionia from New York State. Here and in the surrounding villages and towns, he spent his life building houses, churches, public buildings, mills, and commercial buildings.
