The district of commercial and civic buildings stretches along the shore of Green Bay north and south of Great Lakes Memorial Marina Park between 8th and 6th avenues. Formerly the shoreline of the Menominee Peninsula was lined with lumber mills and yards, and piers. The Birdseye View of the Towns at the Mouth of the Menominee River: Menekkaune, Wisconsin; Menominee, Michigan; Marinette, Wisconsin (1881) is a good pictorial record of the appearance of the area in its lumbering heyday. Today property owners have rehabilitated their commercial properties; the city has installed decorative street lighting and restored the bandshell in the park.
