The Michigan Central Railroad, the first major line in the state, reached Chelsea in 1841 and Chicago in 1852. The railroad line established Chelsea as a shipping point for agricultural and manufactured products. Where other towns in the area were built along rivers as mill towns, Chelsea became the major railroad town in Washtenaw County. This station is the only one in Michigan known to have been designed by the leading Detroit firm of Mason and Rice. Exquisitely detailed with stickwork, this little wooden depot exemplifies Chelsea's role in the heyday of rail transportation.
