W. S. and F. B. Hull’s 1901 courthouse, which was similar to the Tallahatchie County Courthouse (DR47) at Sumner, lasted only twenty-two years before being replaced by this larger H-plan, tan brick building. The Italian Renaissance-influenced design demonstrated Cleveland’s new status as the county’s most populous town. Two one-bay tower-like entrances, decorated with cartouches and garlands, frame a monumental Doric-columned two-story central section and are themselves flanked by pyramid-roofed three-story wings. A two-story brick jail (1938) and a one-story addition (1958) are attached to the courthouse’s rear.
