This two-story brick building constructed by Valentine Warner is among Mississippi’s oldest surviving jails and was a product of the rebuilding campaign undertaken statewide by the Reconstruction government. The five-bay jailer’s residence in front is a belated Greek Revival style in its symmetry, two-panel door, and rectangular windows, but bands of brick corbeling add depth. The portico is a more recent addition. The corbeling continues onto the rear jail section, which has brick pilasters defining bays of tall windows protected by iron bars and iron shutters. A one-story wing on the east side housed the kitchen.
