Baptists first came to the Natchez region in the 1780s, and this church is among the oldest Baptist churches standing in the state. The building’s Greek Revival classicism points toward a date no earlier than the 1830s, although its Federal octagonal cupola with reeded pilasters is virtually identical to the nearby 1824 Methodist church (ND5). African American slaves formed the congregation’s majority on the eve of the Civil War, worshipping in the gallery that is externally indicated by two windows above the front doors.
