In 1970, First Mississippi National Bank, established in 1895, moved from its longtime location on Main Street to this two-story, concrete headquarters on the edge of downtown. The building’s gridded exposed frame with recessed bronze plate-glass skin creates the illusion of a peripteral colonnade supporting a wide plain cornice. Epitomizing 1960s corporate planning, the design makes the most of an awkward V-shaped site to create a pivot point between downtown and the residential neighborhoods to the south and east. A landscaped plaza on the downtown side features a crescent-shaped fountain and a grand staircase to the front entrance. At the rear, a pedestrian bridge from an eighty-car parking lot leads over three drive-through lanes and into the second floor, where an escalator moves customers to the first-level banking floor.
