With its Ionic-columned central pavilion emphasized by a round-arched entrance and wide stair-case, this neoclassical revival brick building on a raised basement is typical of Hunt’s Mississippi work in this period. The former school’s T-plan, with a small auditorium at the rear, was influenced by such nationally renowned school architects as William B. Ittner of St. Louis, who advocated organizing schools into wings by function. The school closed in the late 1970s and was converted to a cultural center.
