Historically referred to as the Devils Lake Sioux, the Spirit Lake Nation is comprised of Dakotah and Lakota people, including Sisseton, Wahpeton, and Yanktonai tribes. Their traditional lifestyle was nomadic and consisted of hunting bison, fishing, and farming along rivers, and residing in tepees. Established by treaty in 1867, the ninety-thousand-acre Spirit Lake Reservation in Benson and Eddy counties was administered from Fort Totten (BE3). There are currently 6,200 enrolled members, with many tribal members living on reservation lands.
