Federal design inspired the red brick Burke County Courthouse, with its sandstone trim on the window sills, segmental-arched door hood, and decorative panels at the cornice line. The projecting entrance bay has second-floor offices that congregate around a central lobby so that business is conducted over a counter rather than in rooms. This is one of three North Dakota county courthouses, with Ward (WD6) and Barnes (1925; 491 2nd Avenue NW, Valley City), designed by the St. Paul firm of Toltz, King and Day.
