In 1981 the North Dakota State Historical Society moved from the Liberty Memorial Building into this new Heritage Center. The building is the repository for the state archives, and for a museum that displays artifacts from around the state. A 2014 addition nearly doubled the building’s size, adding three large galleries, a 50-seat digital-equipped auditorium, climate-controlled archival storage, a children’s gallery, expanded visitors’ services, a cafe and store, and an interpretive “Corridor of History.” Reflecting North Dakotans’ commitment to heritage, much of the construction cost was funded with private support, and the consistently strong support of the state legislature.
