Old Scout Cemetery

1860 established; 1965 relocated. ND 1804, 5 miles west of White Shield, Fort Berthold Reservation of the Three Affiliated Tribes

Since frontier times, Native Americans have served the United States in military service during war and peace. This memorial is a lasting tribute to them, including those who served with General George A. Custer during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The cemetery was moved to this site when the Garrison Dam (ML4) was built, tragically flooding bottomlands. Among those buried at the site are individuals who served as scouts with the U.S. Army under Custer, as well as veterans of the nation’s subsequent military engagements. The serenity of the hilltop site is awe-inspiring. The site continues in active use as a burial place.
