DeElmer Kelly built this octagonal barn as a showplace as well as shelter for his dairy cows and their food. The cows' stanchions are arranged in a circle facing inward to the center of the ground-level story. Above, an enormous hayloft and threshing floor create a spectacular open space without a central supporting beam and that opens up to the crowning cupola. A windmill in the cupola powered the thresher. The barn's interior beams are pegged, but the exterior sheathing is board and batten. Each of the eight sides measures 24.5 feet across, and the cupola is approximately 60 feet above the ground. West of the barn, a small brick structure once housed the pigpen, then a tool and die operation, and finally, a workshop. This is one of two octagonal barns in Crawford County; a smaller, simpler one is located at 34354 PA 27 on the John Warren farm.
