Observer-Reporter Building (Democrat Messenger Building)

-A A +A
Democrat Messenger Building
1939, Frederick G. Scheibler Jr. 32 Church St.

This two-story, buff brick office building with ribbon windows, a flat unadorned cornice, and a recessed central entrance is one of Frederick Scheibler's severest designs. The Moravian tile medallions on the facade and the doorway surround are the only ornamental details. Scheibler was commissioned by Washington County's Monongahela City newspaper magnate Robert H. Robinson to design this building with unusual programmatic demands including a printing plant, shipping facilities, and offices, all branching from a central hallway.
