Raymond brought the sensibilities of early-twentieth-century European ascetic modern to the historical asceticism of Japan when he opened an office in Tokyo that flourished with commissions across Asia. In 1938, with war clouds looming, Raymond moved to the United States, purchasing a farmhouse in Bucks County on a road that still conveys its pre–World War II charm. Not easily seen from the front, Raymond's subtle mix of global modern, with large sheets of glass opening on to the landscape, with the local vernacular suggests a modernist perspective that enlivens contemporary design.
