Bridge Street forms the center of the town and divides the industrial zone from the residential and institutional zones. This block contains late-nineteenth-century hotels with cast-iron porch columns on the second story, presumably made in a local iron foundry; the Independent News Office with its rich pressed-metal cornice; the Phoenixville National Bank, a 1920s Beaux-Arts classical design; and the Colonial Theater, a 1903 vaudeville house, refurbished in the Colonial Revival style in the 1920s when talkies arrived. The theater was updated again after World War II in time for its brush with fame as one of the sites for the filming of the movie The Blob, starring Steve McQueen.
