Penn Square was the site of the first two courthouses; the first was destroyed by fire in 1784, while the second survived until the present courthouse ( LA15) was constructed nearby. In the center of the square is the impressive light granite Civil War monument, funded by the ladies of Lancaster and dedicated in 1874.
