Although the region's constant wars destroyed much of the early domestic architecture, the Spangler farmhouse at Harmony Springs just east of New Berlin shows that in spite of the ongoing dangers, by 1760 settlers had moved beyond simple log houses. This four-bay stone house with an English central plan and chimneys at the gable ends has rifle slits in the basement suggesting that it also served as a private fort.
