The bequest of Dr. Ramon Guiteras is one of the oddest acts of architectural patronage in Bristol's history. Like Samuel P. Colt, he specified that a school be built in memory of his mother (see BR12), but he seems to have rejected Colt's cheeky display of extravagance and splendor. Instead he sought to respect Bristol's architectural heritage, his will specifying a close adaptation of Russell Warren's Mark Antony DeWolf house, which burned the year Guiteras died (1919). Architect Wallis E. Howe treated Guiteras's terms freely, and instead of a copy produced a modern Beaux-Arts performance, in which two splayed wings converge upon a central pedimented block. Built of limestone and pale brick, the building is sensitively sited and dominates the head of Bristol Harbor.
