Sumner Sherman Farm (Othonie Young Farm)

This residence, now surrounded by development, is connected with a third principal millowning family in the area. The Sumner Sherman Farm was purchased by the son of Syra Sherman, who, with his brother Stephen, had founded what was then called the Shermanville (later the Graniteville) Woolen Mill. Sumner eventually left the mill for farming, which his son Ernest continued very grandly as a breeder of Hambletonian trotting horses. For this he built an impressive barn which was lost to a 1970s fire. Mildly interesting as another example of the transition from Greek Revival to early Victorian Italianate, the house is perhaps more so as a third hillside setting for residences of Harrisville-Graniteville mill-owning families. All are large and comfortable, if architecturally somewhat provincial houses: the grand farm of the Shermans; the lordly mansion of the Tinkhams; the expansive suburban country house of the Levys.
