Numbers 57–63 North Broadway are further examples of early twentieth-century workers' duplexes in brick modeled on English precedent, in this case for the Rumford Chemical Works, probably, like the Phillipsdale housing of the same period, designed by Hilton and Jackson ( EP10.1; c. 1910). Diagonally opposite is a rarer type of duplex housing for Rumford workers, a pair in the Queen Anne manner. Only 90–92 North Broadway retains a reasonable approximation of the original design, with a mix of clapboarding and shingles and hoods over some of the windows ( EP10.2; c. 1882). A pretty version of stern Victorian precedent: Queen Anne made this its mission. The hoods require a little care and some imagination to maintain; hence few examples survive.
