Daniel Angell House

The incongruous setting which presses in on this house tends to obscure its quality. Built in two sections, this one-and-one-half-story house with a steep gambrel roof originally consisted of its five western bays (closest to Dean Avenue) with typically narrow windows and a central stone chimney. This was apparently extended for a tavern before the Revolution by an in-line addition with a second door and chimney. Further minor changes around 1800 left the house pretty much as we now see it. Descended from Thomas Angell, who accompanied Roger Williams to Rhode Island, the Angell family were among the first settlers of Johnston.
