Store Block

-A A +A
c. 1895, Dudley Newton. 137 Spring St. (northwest corner of Church St.)

This curious Queen Anne double store block was built around a hip-roofed Federal relic. It displays Queen Anne fondness for combining colonial and Federal bits in novel and picturesque ways, with the projecting bays, interior paneling brought outside, frieze-like treatment of the topmost story, and overall attention to detail particularly characteristic of the style. The frieze at the top may originally have contained some embellishment.
