Sacred Heart Church

-A A +A
1928–1929. 1951, convent (now rectory). 1958, school (now offices). 840 Providence St.

Across the street, the Sacred Heart complex of stuccoed church flanked by complementary buildings is an exceptional example of smalltown grandeur evolved through time by simple means. Plain, unadorned buildings derived from houselike shapes, with elemental gables and hoods over doors, are sited in a symmetrical scheme, well set back from the street on a carefully considered composition of stairs and terracing. The homogeneity of the complex, remarkable considering the time elapsed from start to completion, is substantially due to the essential nature of the principles which conditioned its design.
