Located on Brand Lane, where trailer parks rub shoulders with a mosque, a Syrian Ortho dox church, and an Evangelical revival center, is the extraordinary mandir built by this Gujarati-based Hindu sect, the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayam Sanstha (BAPS). Since 1995, the BAPS has built the two largest Hindu temples outside India, one in the London suburb of Neasden and the other in the Chicago suburb of Bartlett. Following the pattern established by the BAPS mandir in Ahmedabad, India, the Stafford mandir is a roofed, open-air pavilion raised on terraces. It is built of Italian marble and Turkish limestone, all load-bearing without use of steel reinforcing. The devotional sculpture was carved in India then sent to Houston for installation by a team of Indian craftsmen. Asakura Robinson of Houston is the landscape architect.
