Following his successful completion in 1941 of the Mansfield Dam in Austin, Herman Brown of Brown and Root was the building contractor for the Brown Building. Due to its ideal location, the building attracted powerful political tenants including Lady Bird Johnson, who moved her radio station, KTBC, into the ground floor in 1943. The conversion of the Brown Building was one of the city's first adaptive use projects and encouraged downtown residential living in the late 1990s and remains one of Austin's hippest addresses.
