It seems surprising that a full-fledged picturesque, towered villa-type house such as this was built as late as 1909 for Bay City lawyer and Matagorda County judge William S. Holman. Yet J. E. Large, a Bay City architect-builder who worked locally as early as the turn of the twentieth century, did not hold back. This two-story, L-plan house, with its chamfered front bay, slender octagonal corner turret, staged gallery with corner pavilion, bands of fish-scale shingles, and pyramidal roof lost nothing in exuberance for being so far behind the times when first built. Three blocks north, at 2120 6th Street, is another buoyant house, the one-story A. D. Hensley House of 1905, its design attributed to Henry Hensley.
