With this crisp, one-story, steel-framed pavilion in Calder Place, Bolton and Barnstone produced the first in a series of extensively publicized houses based on the modern architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. What photographs of the Blum House in Arts+Architecture (December 1955) and Architectural Record (May 1955) did not emphasize was Howard Barnstone's opportunism in deploying the street-facing garage door to symmetrically frame a wall panel of redwood on the other side of the glass entrance bay. Cantilevered canopies, topped with corrugated plastic, are above the door and window panels.
