The original 1852 city grid incorporated the preexisting cemetery, which was established by General Zachary Taylor for the burial of soldiers killed in a shipping accident upon their arrival in Corpus Christi in 1845. After his departure, what was the first U.S. military cemetery in Texas also became the community's burial grounds. Interments include veterans from the Civil War, World War I, as well as casualties of the Storm of 1919 and yellow fever epidemics.
