The original limestone house, built by stone-mason Lorenz Schmidt, was a one-and-a-half-story three-bay structure. Jakob Gold Jr., whose father came with his family from Coblenz, Germany, in 1852, added the second floor in 1902. Earlier photos indicate that the house was not plastered in stucco as it is today. The detailing of the transom above the front door is particularly elegant.
