This combination of two public buildings on one site creates a civic center for this west-side suburb, and fronts on a public park. The library is fitted alongside an existing grove of mature trees, and the adjoining fire station is positioned to provide maximum views and turning space for the trucks as they exit the station. Both buildings make use of brick and glazed brick laid in a checkerboard pattern around the base of the two, and they also feature tall pylon signage proclaiming their function. The playful library sign on the projecting eave of the library roof and the pierced-metal screens on both structures were designed by San Antonio artist Henry Rayburn.
