One of a number of Moderne courthouses in the state, this one replaced a nineteenth-century structure by Alfred Giles. The three-part massing of the structure emphasizes the center, with a monumental split stair flanked by tall lighting pylons. The carved frieze atop the building depicts allegorical images of Liberty and Justice. The second floor of the central block contains the main courtroom, highlighted on the facade by tall, multilight windows that demarcate the scale of the room within. Wirtz also designed the Seguin Municipal Building at 205 N. River Street in the same style but on a smaller scale.
