The 200 to 400 blocks of W. Main Street contain what remains of Arlington’s older downtown south of the tracks, including this former post office. The buff brick modern classical building contains Otis Dozier’s mural Gathering Pecans (1941). Across the street at 201 W. Main the Arlington Museum of Art has occupied the former J. C. Penney Co. Building (1956) since 1989.
Arlington’s downtown today is on Abram Street, one block south of Main Street. Arlington City Hall (1981; 101 W. Abram Street) is a three-story, smooth-faced, cast-in-place concrete building with deeply recessed windows and a weighty appearance that announces Arlington’s embrace of Brutalism in the 1970s and 1980s.
