Foremost among the commercial buildings around the square is this former bank building. Here, James Edward Flanders established the Romanesque Revival style on the square thirteen years before the construction of Gordon’s Romanesque Revival courthouse (CW19) across the street. The heavy limestone base is marked by squat pink granite columns with foliated capitals. The second- and third-story walls of red brick have narrow round-arched windows accented with limestone. The building originally had a corner octagonal turret that cantilevered from the third floor and a tall, pyramidal roof with dormers, both later removed.
