Fort Richardson State Park, Historic Site, and Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway

After the Civil War, the U.S. Army had reoccupied the Texas frontier by the summer of 1866, with posts in this part of the state located at Jacksboro, Buffalo Springs, and the old Fort Belknap. These were consolidated in 1868 at the newly constructed Fort Richardson. The post was a regimental headquarters, with units engaged in general area security and the final campaigns in 1874–1875 to remove the Plains Indians to reservations in Indian Territory. The fort was decommissioned in 1878. The ruined complex was consolidated with public works projects in the 1930s, resulting in preservation of seven original buildings: the commanding officer’s quarters, hospital (museum), commissary storehouse, bakery, powder magazine, morgue, and guardhouse.
