Tennessee-born Daniel Waggoner started a cattle ranch in Wise County that grew into a 535,000-acre empire. Although his son, William Thomas, moved the headquarters to Vernon, Waggoner and his wife Sicily Ann remained in Decatur, building this sixteen-room Italianate Villa on a hill east of town. The two-story rock-faced limestone structure has smoothly finished red sandstone quoins and window surrounds and the deep, bracketed cornice supports mansard roofs that are crowned with the original cast-iron cresting. A tower rises from an inside corner of the irregular plan, capped with a steeplelike roof and an unusual raking, bracketed cornice.
