The Loretto Academy, a private Roman Catholic girl’s school, acquired this land in 1922 and opened the academy building in September 1923. The chapel, completed in 1931, was designed by Gustavus Trost. The monumental, Italianate chapel is pivoted at an angle between symmetrically arrayed three-story academic buildings and keyed architecturally to the pilgrimage site at Loreto, Italy, from which the school takes its name. Although appearing to be a campanile, the tower functions as a water tower.
