A ferry operated here as early as 1854 where the Old Georgetown Road crossed the Leon River, a major traffic route in Central Texas. A bowstring truss bridge was built in 1882, but it was damaged by floods in 1899, and by 1900 a more substantial replacement was needed. The George E. King Bridge Company of Des Moines, Iowa, built this 137-foot Pratt through-truss bridge, with wood decking, lattice railings, and stone abutments. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1994 by the Texas Department of Transportation and is one of the few such bridges remaining in Texas that still carries traffic.
