Set on the lowest of the roads etched around Lake Ransom Canyon at the bottom of Yellowhouse Canyon, the Gary House has views across the water up and down the lake. A plinth of gray and red concrete blocks supports a three-story, flat roofed house with tan stuccoed walls. The main linear block has projecting secondary taller and lower blocks to break up the mass, which is accentuated by individual punched windows. This gives the central and northern parts of the house a modernist Pueblo appearance. The south block is entirely different. A grid of wood lattice overlays the stucco and is infilled with small windows, giving the vague impression of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Millard House of 1923 in Pasadena. The result is a disharmonious but eye-catching assemblage.
