Since 1976, the museum has occupied the former public library, built with funding from the Carnegie Foundation. The classical scheme of red brick is composed of a single story above a limestone raised basement and has a modest stone portico at the entrance.
On the same block at 315 S. Walnut, the two-story Walnut Street Church of Christ (1920), built of beige brick on a raised foundation, has a wide flight of steps leading to a loggia of two Ionic columns in antis.
