Ourand House

Italianate was one of the most popular residential and commercial styles in Denison during the town’s first decade of development. John Ourand, who operated a saloon on Main Street, built a two-story, red brick residence two blocks north of his bar in 1881. The house’s square central tower and delicate wooden porch are characteristic of the Italian Villa style. Window hoods and cornices were fabricated of pressed metal, a catalog-order material newly available on the railroad. Ourand was a cavalry officer in Arizona during the Civil War before moving to Denison in the early 1870s, one of the town’s earliest settlers.
