Set at the edge of the Midland College Campus, the Midland Community Theatre (subsequently named in honor of the company’s founding director, Art Cole) consists of cubic, brick-clad volumes housing various program spaces. The glazed entrance front is marked by slender brick piers. Between this colonnade and the parking lot to the east and sheltered by privet hedges, a small semi-elliptical amphitheater with concrete seats faces the building across a lawn.
To the east at 1901–1923 Crescent Place, Welch, Rhotenberry, and Wellen were responsible for the Crescent Place subdivision (1981). Frank Welch designed the Plaza Oaks Shopping Center (1962; 1977, 1981 altered) at 2101 W. Wadley. And nearby to the west he was responsible for a subdivision of courtyard houses, the twenty-unit Winchester Court (1975; 1–20 Winchester Court).
