Both the three-story hotel and the adjacent two-story saloon were built of rock-faced red Pecos sandstone, although the hotel has been painted a buff color. Stepped parapets are the sole effort at ornamentation on these utilitarian buildings, along with sidewalk canopies with verandahs to watch the railroad activities across the street. R. S. Johnson opened the hotel to serve land promoters, traveling salesmen, and new settlers. The hotel was rehabilitated in 1962 to accommodate its present use as a museum.
