Castle’s most exuberant retail design in Abilene belonged to Taylor County’s first department store. The two-and-a-half-story, cream-colored terra-cotta facade is divided into three bays with pilasters that extend past the parapet and terminate with bell-shaped caps. The second-floor spandrels and the parapet consist of ranks of small Gothic pointed arches, further emphasizing the verticality of the piers. The first-floor storefronts and awnings have been altered, but the strength of the Gothic imagery remains.
