The most impressive monument at the west end of the historic downtown district is the Bankhead Highway Bridge, which carries W. Broadway Street over the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway tracks. It is a distinguished piece of reinforced concrete engineering designed as a joint endeavor by the Texas Highway Department and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads.
