The two-story central-hall house contrasts white wood siding with bright red brick porch piers and chimneys. The hipped roofs with broad overhangs, large, square, sash windows, and abstracted porch pier capitals are Prairie Style traits. After serving in the Confederate army and ranching in western Texas, James H. Cage arrived in Stephenville in 1872, setting up in the general merchandise business. He established the Cage Land and Cattle Company and amassed a nearly fifteen-thousand-acre ranch by 1900, nearly half of Erath County. Cage acquired this property in 1876 with an existing house. After he died in 1912, this house was built for his widow, Janie, by their children.
