In the 1930s Stone explored the International Style idiom, producing a series of landmark designs, such as the original building of the Museum of Modern Art (1939), New York. In the 1950s he rediscovered the power of ornament with his pierced block walls and columns. This house, with its flat roof, large areas of glazing, and open plan, is very much in the International Style, but the brick screen predicts the coming return to ornament.
