A major example of a Federal-era commercial building designed in a temple format, the bank is of brick laid in a precise Flemish bond, with stone lintels and keystones. The ground floor originally served as the bank, and the cashier lived above, in quarters entered through the arched doorway on the side. The original interior woodwork survives, and a banking museum is located in the rear. Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis appeared here at different times as part of their respective war efforts.
