Spring Grove

Essentially Federal in form, Spring Grove is a five-bay house with end chimneys and a dwarf Ionic portico. The interior woodwork and decorative plasterwork are derived from Asher Benjamin's pattern books. Built for a large landholder, Robert Murphy, the house is unusual for its material. Brick houses from this period are rare in the Northern Neck. They reflect the conservatism and the fleeting prosperity of the early nineteenth century in the region. Its rural setting remains unspoiled.
